Teeth Whitening Q & A

How did my teeth get so dull?

There are several reasons why your teeth might not be as bright as you’d like, including:

  • Dietary choices: Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark berries contain pigments that stain teeth
  • Medication: Some antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and antibiotics cause teeth staining
  • Tobacco use: Tar and nicotine turn teeth yellow
  • Age: Tooth enamel thins as you age, revealing the yellower dentin underneath

What happens during in-office teeth whitening?

Dr. Ata-Abadi examines your mouth to make sure you’re a good candidate for teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a safe procedure, but it may not work on all stains, such as those found on veneers or crowns, or with tooth discoloration caused by trauma.

During treatment, you wear a mouthguard to protect your gums and special sunglasses to protect your eyes. A bleaching gel is painted on your teeth, and a LED light is positioned to activate the gel.

The in-office teeth whitening treatment takes only one hour to brighten your smile dramatically. You may feel some sensitivity, but the discomfort doesn’t last long, and the confidence boost is immediate.

Can I whiten my teeth at home?

If you’re unable to come into the office for teeth whitening or want to whiten on your own time, Dentistry at Grayhawk also offers pre-filled teeth whitening take-home trays. You can choose between trays you wear during the day for about 30 minutes or those you wear while you sleep.

The at-home teeth whitening system takes about two weeks to get your teeth white and bright.

How long do results from teeth whitening last?

Results from teeth whitening depend a lot on you. If you take steps to help keep your teeth clean at home, you may be able to maintain the whiteness for up to a year.

Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day reduces the risk of surface stains setting in. Dr. Ata-Abadi also recommends that you come to the office for your regularly scheduled checkups and cleanings for polishing and deep cleaning.

Limiting your intake of foods and drinks that cause stains also helps keep your teeth white. And if you’re a smoker, quitting helps you maintain a brighter smile.

If you’re not happy with the color of your teeth or lack the confidence to share your smile, the team at Dentistry at Grayhawk can give you a healthy, white smile quickly. Call today or book an appointment online.
