Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth that are custom-made in a dental lab to fit your mouth precisely. Depending on if you have lost all or some of your teeth, you may need full dentures or a partial denture. Full dentures replace all of your teeth and fit over your gums to create a natural-looking smile.

Drs. Ata-Abadi use partial dentures when you’re only missing a few teeth. Partial dentures are available in both fixed and removable designs. Fixed partials attach to either dental implants or crowns on either side of the gap in your teeth. Removable partial dentures are held in place with wires or clasps that attach to your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Dentures fill out your face, look natural, and help you feel confident about smiling or speaking in public. They also improve your ability to chew and eat comfortably. They are custom-made so no one will notice they’re not natural teeth.

How are dentures fitted?

The highly trained team at Dentistry at Grayhawk typically fits your dentures in three visits. During your first visit, Dr. Ata-Abadi talks to you about the style and look of dentures that can improve your dental health and your smile and takes molds of your mouth. Your dentures are then custom-made in a dental lab to fit your mouth exactly.

At your second appointment, Dr. Ata-Abadi checks the fit of your dentures and gives you instructions on how long to wear them every day and how to clean and care for them. At your third appointment, which is usually several weeks after you’re fitted with your dentures, Dr. Ata-Abadi makes any necessary adjustments to ensure your comfort and the health of your gums.

What is best practice for getting used to wearing dentures?

It’s normal for dentures to feel strange when you first start to wear them. You can get used to them more quickly by following your dentist’s instructions on wearing them. You might also find that reading aloud or singing along with your favorite songs can help you get used to your dentures and improve your speech more quickly.
